When we were children, we just wanted to be grown up. I remember how my sister Samantha, my friend Grace and I, imagined our lives would be when we were the perfect age i.e. 19 (we were 9 or 10 years old at the time). We fantasized about how wonderful it would be as we planned to share a house or apartment , live and work together. Off-course we would have beautiful bodies , hair and wear fabulous clothes. We would have great careers and drive beautiful cars ( like Charlie’s Angels).
Oh how we wished to be nineteen! We could not wait. Many hours were spent laying on our backs on the grass, looking up at the clouds floating by and imagining our wonderful life that was lying ahead of us. It never crossed our minds that we would one day contemplate the question , “Are you tired of fighting and ready to throw in the towel?”
Now, many years later (too many to mention), disillusioned by the realities, heartbreaks and disappointments in life, I sometimes look in the mirror and wonder if that really was what we thought life would be like? Even remotely? What happened to our dreams, the more realistic ones?
I know that we all face very difficult and sometimes extremely painful times in our lives, as I too have. I’ve seen my friends, siblings or colleagues struggle for years with hardships like trying to raise their children alone, or against financial pressures, addictions or heartbreak from a betrayal or sometimes loss. Depression so heavy ,settles on some like a dark cloud ,too thick to see through or breathe in.
It seems that as soon as one battle is won, another starts in a different area. It seems that there is never a cease-fire , that we are always in a war. I am amazed at the amount of tears a person is able to cry in a lifetime. How does the heart not literally stop beating from shear lack of the will to carry on? Sadly ,despair leading to substance abuse or other destructive behaviour or even suicide becomes an option for many as the strength to carry on is just finally depleted.
AND BROKEN TOYS…
How long can we carry on? Are you battle weary? Are you tired of fighting and ready to throw in the towel?
If you have reached this point, it is the best place you can be as you are finally ready to hand it over to Jesus.
The reason that we are so tired is that we don’t realize that we are in a war that we don’t need to be fighting because “ …the battle is the LORD’s… (1 Samuel 17:47 KJV ) We are in the age-old battle between God and Satan. We are God’s creation , made in His own image and who He loves so much that He sent His only begotten son , Jesus, to pay for our sins. Satan hates us. “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10 NKJV)
One of the devil’s objectives is to “ wear out the saints of the most High” ( Dan. 7:25). He causes strife, stress and calamity, thereby stirring up worry and anxious thoughts in our minds. We then jump into action by leaning on our own efforts to manage and solve our problems. Our inadequacy and panic is magnified as we take our eyes off God who is then minimized.
As Ephesians 6:12 tells us that …“we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities,against powers,against rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” We are not fighting people or circumstances. Our battle is spiritual.
Worship is one of the most powerful weapons to destroy darkness and all the schemes of the devil and his demons. When you magnify the Lord Jesus, He inhabits the praises of His people and the wicked perish. Psalm 68: 1,2 “ Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered;…as wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.” As darkness is dispelled by light, so evil cannot exist where Jesus is being praised and worshiped. Develop your praise phrase (eg. Praise you Jesus, thank you Lord) and speak it as often as you can. Play your favorite worship collection while you work or sleep. Even if you turn the volume down so low that it cannot be heard by the human ear, spirits can hear it.
Jesus’s gift of righteousness is freely given, but our Gracious Heavenly father, having created us as the only beings with free will, asks us to CHOOSE Him. When we accept Jesus , we invite the full power , might and majesty of the tri-une God into our lives .
He promises us so much in His word ,as the righteousness of God in Christ. More specifically, He promises us that “you will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourself, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord“. ( 2 Chron 20:17.)
GIVE IT ALL TO JESUS
You are weary because you are carrying burdens that are too heavy which Jesus offers to carry for you. “Give all your worries and cares to God for He cares for you.” (1Peter 5:7.) Jesus invites us to come to Him all who are weary and burdened and He will give you rest. ( Matt 11:28)
We have believed this lie of the devil for so long: that we have to fix situations around us that seem unfair. We feel that it is our responsibility to point out where our brother or sister has stumbled and proceed to correct them. We want to right the wrongs done to us or our loved ones because “they can’t get away with this!”.
Laying it down or letting it go, is contrary to our understanding of fairness or justice. Praying about our situation and looking to God to handle it, goes against reality and our logical nature.
Our stubborn refusal to look to our creator and to gain an understanding of His heart for us, leaves us dismayed and disheartened through struggle. We believe in God enough to know that He is there , but the problem comes when we need to TRUST in this God we say we believe in. Trusting Him requires FAITH. This is our part. We have to grow our faith. ” So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17). There is no other way in which to get faith. There is no other way to please God, but by faith.
DRESS FOR THE FIGHT
” Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore,
- having girded your waist with truth,
- having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and
- having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
- above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
- And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit which is the word of God;
praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints ” Eph 6: 11-18 .
THE BATTLE IS THE LORD’S
Let us then pick our battles. The only battle we must fight is the good fight of faith. ( 1 Tim 6:12) Give other battles to God, because it is His. We do our part by trusting in Him after we have prayed and cast our cares upon Him. As we draw near to Him in our praise and worship and our study of the Word, He draws near to us.
We don’t have to be burdened . We don’t have to be worn out. Let us replace the garment of heaviness with the garment of praise.
“Let’s not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up. (Galatians 6:9)
Remember… ” you are of God, and have defeated and overcome them, because He who is in you, is GREATER than he who is in the world” 1 John 4:4
